What Size Portrait Should I Hang Above My Sofa?
Norava StudioThe rule most designers reach for first is proportion, not inches. A portrait above a sofa should generally span about two-thirds the width of the piece beneath it — narrower, and it reads as an afterthought floating in too much empty wall; wider, and it starts to overwhelm the furniture instead of framing it.
For a standard 84-inch sofa, that puts you somewhere in the 48 to 60-inch range for the painting itself. Height matters just as much as width, though it gets less attention. Leave roughly 6 to 10 inches between the top of the sofa back and the bottom edge of the frame — close enough that the two feel connected, far enough that the painting doesn't look like it's resting on the cushions.
If you're between two sizes, size up. The far more common mistake in living rooms is undersizing out of caution, leaving a technically "decorated" wall that still reads as unfinished. A portrait with real scale does more than fill space — it gives the whole seating area a sense of intention it didn't have before.
